In the world of HD, there are two basic choices in televisions - televisions that include the digital tuner, known as HDTVs, and televisions that use a separate digital tuner, known as HD Monitors. Current regulations require all 25" and larger televisions to include a digital tuner, so HD Monitors are normally found in some products under 25".

HD Monitors and HD Televisions have the highest form of DTV performance - 5 times more picture detail than analog television. This resolution is broadcast by most broadcasters, and the image quality is nothing less than stunning.

An important development in DTV is the introduction of Digital Cable Ready televisions. These are televisions that include special circuits which eliminate the need for a separate cable set-top box. A slot for a CableCARD® is included in the back of the set. When the CableCARD is received from your cable operator, and inserted into the slot (easily done by any consumer), it allows the consumer to receive scrambled and subscription digital programming from the cable operator. Some cable operators may want to force you to take a set-top-box, which costs more per month, and is harder to use. By law, cable operators must give you a CableCARD if you request.

Not all DTV's include CableCARD. This is an important feature that makes your TV easier to set up and use, and does not require the use of a separate cable set-top-box.

Not all CableCARD televisions include a program guide. It's important to have a program guide so you can easily navigate all the cable and broadcast channels. All LG DTV's which are CableCARD compatible include a program guide.

The DTV standard also includes two lower forms of performance - EDTV & ED Monitors (DVD quality) and SDTV & SD Monitors (analog TV quality).
